My keywords are environmentalism, deforestation and eco-melancholy, and GFW (Global Forest Watch), from the WRI (World Resources Institute), is a website which aggregates monitoring-data for the world's forests, and allows users to create dashboards for presentation and research purposes. It, and its data, are publicly accessible. It is relevant to my portfolio project because it displays the data points I intend to critically examine in regards to humanity's collective failures to protect our precious forest resources. In reference to this image (see Image 1), it summarizes tree cover loss in Brazil, from 2002 to 2024, and how, over this period, the country lost 33.5 Mha (million hectares). The data in this graph illustrates how Brazil is continuing to cut down its rainforests and I correlate how these losses affect the water cycle in other areas in the world, in particular the Pacific Northwest.
