Instructor chosen: Meg Spratt
Keywords chosen: Perception, images, news, psychology, media
Reflection:
I chose the keyword “perception” because it refers to how information can be decoded. It is the perception of the viewer of an image that is formulated by the decoding process, but also in how the image is encoded. In Meg Spratt’s work, “Of Photographs and Flags: Uses and Perceptions of an Iconic Image Before and After September 11, 2001”, it’s clear the construct of perception is important to the body of the article, as it is in the title and is referenced at least 10 times throughout the article, but the article uses it to form the basis for how media encodes imagery. In the case of the flag being raised in Iwo Jima, paralleled with the flag being raised at ground zero of the 9/11 attacks, the perception of the public at large is important to the article's exploration of how media and identity can inform based on a single image.
